  • With the CIS Access Layer Replacement program - A programme of work is being undertaken at Durham University to ensure that it has IT foundations that are robust and fit for purpose in the future. A far-reaching infrastructure programme will introduce technologies to provide stability and appropriate underpinning architecture. Utilising simple, standard, supportable, secure, scalable solutions it will support the delivery of University projects in a time of significant change across the organisation.As part of these ongoing IT improvements within the University, the ageing network access layer switching environment is being replaced with the latest hardware from Aruba. This programme of work will run alongside an existing Wireless Refresh Project, which will see all WiFi Access Points across campus being replaced with latest generation Aruba models.This role will be primarily focused on the planning, preparation, and physical replacement of mostly HP and Cisco legacy access layer switches across a large section of the University estate with new Aruba equipment. Time will be split between detailed wiring centre port/patch auditing of existing infrastructure to establish requirements on a particular site, then a programme of physical replacement of the legacy equipment and post-installation checks.At times, there may be a requirement to assist the wider CIS Network Team with business-as-usual tasks, or the Wireless Refresh project team with installation tasks.Your profile: The successful applicant will:
  • Have an extensive knowledge of networking backed by a Cisco CCNA or Aruba ACSA qualification
  • Have a working knowledge of wireless technologies
  • Have a demonstrable record of success in delivering and supporting IT rollouts of a large scale, to meet customer requirements.
  • Have a keen eye for detail and accuracy in both planning and implementation
  • Show a collaborative mind-set and experience of working successfully within a broader team of technical subject matter experts and possess excellent communication and liaison skills.
  • Be able to represent CIS in a professional manner, in working closely with key stakeholders, IT colleagues and external service providers, in supporting the implementation of change.
  • Be flexible in terms of working hours.
  • Switch installations may need to take place outside of normal office hours, usually to be completed before 9am.Locations The post holder’s core base will be at the Upper Mountjoy site within the University Campus in Durham (DH1 3LE). However the University operates on multiple sites and although some planning and preparation tasks may be conducted remotely, the majority of the work in this role will take place within University buildings, in various locations across campus.35 hours per week Monday to Friday
