Job Description

Software EngineerDerbySalary: NegotiableFull TimeROLE PURPOSEThe Software Engineer is primarily responsible for delivering High Quality, Reliable software systems to our customers, through careful, forward thinking design and development. Acting as technical lead on the software aspects of projects and mentoring lessexperienced Software Engineers.ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The majority of the role will be programming, using C# to create both Desktop and Web based software systems
  • Involvement in furthering our migration towards distributed and cloud native solutions
  • Contributing to software development projects within the Omnicom Balfour Beatty software team, by undertaking analysis, design and development activities in line with the business software development process, quality plans and all other internal qualityprocesses
  • Developing robust maintainable software for projects allocated by the business
  • Carrying out work in accordance with our ISO-9001 quality system
  • Supporting the full project lifecycle, all the way from requirements capture through to final testing, release and ongoing maintenance
  • Working both independently and as part of a team to ensure systems are working effectively
  • Taking on team and technical leadership duties, such as mentoring more junior members of the team and leading projects
  • Work with the project lead, taking part in daily stand-ups, to keep the team up to date with progress and identified risks
  • Contribute to the creation of requirements and testing documents as required by the project lead
  • Work alongside other Engineers, including domain experts, for the purposes of analysis, design, development and testing of allocated deliverables
PERSONAL QUALITIES AND EXPERIENCE The following qualities/experience are essential:
  • Strong experience with C based programming languages (ideally C#, with some C++/Java)
  • Exposure to modern web development frameworks and technologies
  • Knowledge and understanding of relational database systems (ideally including PostgreSQL)
  • An appreciation of User Experience (bonus points for skills in Information Architecture and Interaction design)
  • Commercial experience of the Visual Studio development environment
  • A good grasp of simple mathematics (basic Euclidean geometry)
  • Good interpersonal and written / verbal communication
  • General software programming knowledge and a keen interest in engineering solutions.
The following qualities/experience are desirable:
  • Preferably a basic understanding of the Rail industry
