Job Description

Job Description JR6082098 Safety and Reliability EngineerWe power the UKs nuclear underwater defences.Our market-leading position in submarine propulsion systems encompasses everything from design and procurement to manufacture and in-service support.For the last 60 years we have designed, supplied and supported the nuclear propulsion plant that provides power for all of the UK Royal Navys nuclear submarines.A workforce of approximately 3500, based primarily in Derby, manage these assets across their full lifecycle. This includes providing frontline support across the world for Royal Navy submarine reactor plant equipment from the Companys OperationsCentre in Derby.The Role:Our Submarines business are currently working on a large campaign in which we are looking for circa 100 engineers across multiple engineering disciplines. As part of this we are looking for a number of people with a strong background in Nuclear Plant Safety& Reliability Engineering to join us in (but not limited to):

  • Integrating cross-functional learning from Nuclear, Radiological and Process Safety best practice.
  • Carrying out numerical assessment of risk from normal and accident conditions.
  • Supporting the development of the Operating Range for Nuclear Facilities and Plant
  • Developing ALARP arguments supporting nuclear safety cases.
  • Integrating design data into safety case claims, arguments and evidence-based cases.
  • Challenging the Status Quo to develop modern standard Safety Case.
  • Producing Nuclear Safety Cases for new Nuclear Manufacturing Facilities
  • Undertaking Hazard Identification and analysis assessments to determine Nuclear accident scenarios and engineered prevention mechanisms
Key Skills and Qualifications:
  • Degree in Engineering, Maths, Physics or equivalent.
  • A demonstrable ability to work in multidisciplinary teams to tight deadlines.
  • The ability to provide clear, concise and accurate technical reports.
  • Experience or knowledge of hazard identification techniques such as FMEAs, HAZOPs, Fault & Event Tree Analysis, and reliability evaluation methods would be an advantage.
  • Experience or knowledge of hazard assessment processes would be an advantage, including design basis assessment techniques (e.g. production of fault schedules, the derivation of safety functional requirements) and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)assessments.
  • Appreciation of the role of human factors and human reliability as part of safety cases would be an advantage.
  • Experience as a nuclear safety case author or assessor, with knowledge of existing UK licensed or authorised plants or sites or other relevant similarly regulated industry would be an advantage.
