Job Description

Job Description With the increasing need for energy storage solutions within all sectors an, exciting opportunity has arisen for an Energy Storage System (ESS) Specialist to join the Rolls-Royce Electrical (RRE)team in Derby or Bristol. Qualified candidates will bring a deep understanding of underlying electro-chemistry technologies, battery cells, technology, product design and safety; and be able to confidently liaise with customers to elicit design drivingrequirements.RRE is part of Rolls-Royce Holdings plc having a global footprint that supports all our operating sectors of Civil Aerospace, Defence, and Power Systems. Current activities in RRE are focused heavily on electrical propulsion, including electrical power generation,energy storage, and electrical power distribution.This role requires an in-depth knowledge of all facets of ESS design including: requirements capture, cell selection; thermal and mechanical pack design and analysis; ESS architecture and trades; design for manufacture and assembly; verification and certification.Excellent organisational & communication skills are vital as the role may require working on multiple projects simultaneously, mostly in a technical role and involve communicating across, upwards and downwards within the organisation.In this role you will also support the continued development of the technology and broader electrical capability within RRE to ensure we have the required technical expertise supported by world class process, practices and tools to engineer solutions ofthe highest quality and reliability.At Rolls-Royce, we develop integrated power and propulsion solutions and innovative technologies that keep our customers one step ahead of an ever-changing worldKey Accountabilities:

  • Development of safe, lightweight and high integrity Energy Storage System products from requirements elicitation, concept definition, trade studies, detailed design and analysis, and demonstration prototypes through to initial production.
  • Development of test plans, including Design of Experiments, for Verification & Validation activities and deliver through a combination of in-house testing and use of the external supply chain.
  • Liaise with cell suppliers and customers to determine optimal, commercially viable solutions.
  • Support battery cell selection and characterisation to drive optimised designs and support electro-thermal coupled modelling activities.
  • Support the continuous development of ESS hazards and failure mechanism understanding, in particular thermal runaway.
  • Support various aspects of the design including:
    • overall product design and provide specialist input to the safety case and certification process.
    • development of advanced BMS algorithms for high integrity status evaluation of SoC and SoH.
    • the continuous evolution of the Energy Storage product and supply chain strategy.
    • the continuous development of ESS design tools, methods and best practices.
    • product integration into the overall RRE power system and customer platform.
  • Ensure that all IP is captured, and designs are free from 3rd party IP.
  • Work with global team members within the Energy Storage Design community to share knowledge and develop common design standards and practices.
  • Support and contribute to electrical research activities at our University Technology Centres in the UK and associated external research activities in the US, Norway and Singapore.
Qualifications:
  • Understanding of cells, Energy Storage system and wider electrical systems and the underlying technology with experience in cell characterisation and failure modes, battery pack design and BMS.
  • Experience in writing technical documents such as: design documentation, procurement & test specifications; performance reports; hazard assessments & FMECAs; product safety case etc.
  • Minimum of a bachelors degree in Engineering or equivalent. Working towards or achieved Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong communication skills (i.e., verbal, written, and presentation) for both expert and non-expert audiences and ability to meet aggressive reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets.
