Job Description

Downstream Processing Engineer- ManchesterSalary – Competitive Salary + Excellent Holidays + Flexible Working Hours + Share Options + PensionThe ClientOur client is facilitating the transition of the $36 billion surfactant market from harmful, oilbased chemicals to biobased alternatives by working with the current market leaders to provide a collaborative production platform.The company is currently completing the build of its pilot facility launching tonne scale production of sophorolipids and work with multiple industrial partners to take the product to market. In line with this, they are fundraising to build their first ktonne scale commercial sophorolipid plant.This highly successful business is expanding its focus beyond sophorolipids and developing processes to produce additional biosurfactants in collaboration with external market facing partners.The company believe collaboration between companies, disciplines and individuals are the best ways to develop the biosurfactant industry. This role will involve work both in Manchester at their laboratories and their pilot plant in Daresbury.The RoleThe successful candidate will be responsible for the development and refinement of downstream processes for sophorolipids and then other biosurfactants as the company expands its portfolio. This role will involve both hands on work in the lab, pilot and commercial facilities and desk-based engineering work. The appointee will work closely with the pilot plant team and the external collaborators, ensuring a smooth scale up process all the way through to commercial operation. Once the process for each product is complete at laboratory scale, the candidate will be a key part of the team translating the process to pilot and then commercial scale. Previous Knowledge and Experience Essential: Enthusiasm and ability to think creatively and develop new technology.Strong mathematical skills and knowledge of calculations useful in the design, operation and scale up of downstream processes, with the ability to be creative in finding new solutions to characterise processes.Excellent trouble shooting skills in the context of downstream processing.Desirable: Experience operating and/or designing downstream processing for fermentation-based products and/or surfactants.Understanding of phase separation/surfactant behaviour.Understanding of lipid quantification and purification techniques.Knowledge and experience of implementing process control systems.Experience and ability to coordinate a scale up project with a range of industrial and academic partners.Specific knowledge of biosurfactants, in particular glycolipid biosurfactants.PhD or similar development experience in process development of downstream processes.Expertise and experience with fermentation processes.Important Information: We endeavour to process your personal data in a fair and transparent manner.
