Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in the UK with more first time strokes occurring at an earlier age compared to 10 years ago (Gov.UK, 2018). Stroke can be a life changing event for the patient and their families.Our established Stroke Ward in Prince Philip Hospital consists of 5 Acute stroke beds in a separate unit and 24 rehabilitation beds. We are committed to delivering the best care to not only our patients but also to their families, supporting them through what can be a traumatic event.We are looking for dedicated Staff Nurses to join our team who are passionate about delivering the best care possible, who have excellent communications skills and are willing to work as part of a committed and skilled multi disciplinary team, striving to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients and their families.Stroke is a specialised area there will be ample opportunities to develop your knowledge in both the acute side of stroke and the continuing rehabilitation process. You will develop extended skills to enable you to work within the Acute Stroke Unit and assist in Thrombolysis and stroke pathways.Stroke skills such as swallow assessments, Nasogastric tube insertion as well as the individualised aftercare for each of these new skills, will also be achieved while working in an encouraging and supportive environment. Extended skills such as venepuncture, cannulation and female/male catheterisation can also be achieved.You will develop skills in Multi-disciplinary team working. You will be exposed to a very close working relationship with therapists such as physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, speech therapies, dieticians and medical teams. The exposure to Rehabilitation meetings, family meetings and discharge planning meetings which will also increase your skills as a qualified nurse.Support will be given from all team members during your transition onto the ward. There is also an option to join the preceptorship program for newly qualified nurses.There are both full time and part time posts available, this will be on a shift working pattern including days and nights.
