This post would be ideal for those wishing to gain experience in Emergency Medicine at a higher level before considering further training either via the ST or CESR route.The department has a good track record of developing senior EM doctors and support will be given to work towards gaining an ST post or Specialist Registration via Article 14. The department has recently supported 2 Specialty and Staff Grade doctors through the Fellowship Examination (FRCEM).The department is also committed to the provision of protected time for professional development, to prepare for appraisal, revalidation and exams. By negotiation for the appropriate candidate opportunities exist to develop skills in a number of fields or areas aligned to Emergency Medicine including; pre-hospital care with the department’s own award winning Physician Response Unit, teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, quality improvement and service development, research or other medical specialties relevant to a career in Emergency Medicine such as Critical Care.Emergency Medicine in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is undergoing rapid changes currently as part of the health board’s Clinical Futures programme and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health Board’s two Type 1 Emergency Departments have recently merged into a brand new department in the new specialist and critical care centre at the Grange University Hospital. The successful candidate would be expected to work across the health board’s acute sites to support the clinical model as required.Grange University Hospital is a new purpose built specialist critical care centre, with all core clinical services on site. Across all sites the Emergency Department team currently see approximately 150000 patients per year of which approximately 25% are children. The health board serves the people of Gwent, Monmouthshire and South Powys and includes in its catchment area the historic market town of Abergavenny and the young City of Newport host of the 2010 Ryder Cup and 2014 NATO summit. Centrally located in the patch Grange University Hospital maintains excellent transport links by road to the M4 corridor and by rail to the whole of South Wales, the Midlands, North West of England and London.Emergency Medicine in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is consultant led with an emphasis on training for all members of the team. The consultant body is made up of 21 consultants and one consultant nurse across the sites. This dynamic and enthusiastic team of Consultants believe in leading from the frontline and aim to provide outstanding care with a shop floor presence from 8am until midnight day seven days a week. They are supported by an excellent Middle Grade tier made up of ST4+ trainees, Speciality doctors and Senior Clinical Fellows and Junior (F2/CT level) doctors. The team are further complemented by experienced Emergency Nurse Practioners, Advanced Clinical Practioners and Physicians Asssociates.There is a strong emphasis on teaching. There is a cross-site middle grade teaching program along with regular paediatric resuscitation or trauma simulation which is also attended by the relevant hospital specialities. We have a departmental Ultrasound machine with echo probe and middle grades are expected to achieve Level 1 Emergency Ultrasound competence during their time with us.Although this Fixed Term Appointment post is not recognised for training, it is afforded the same training opportunities, with full access to in house training. You will receive an intensive departmental induction, an Educational Supervisor, monthly teaching sessions and support to attend courses or exams that will further a career in Emergency Medicine.
