Head of SustainabilityLocation: Coventry/Milton Keynes (Hybrid working)Package: Attractive Basic Salary (commensurate with experience),company car/allowance, lucrative bonus & excellent PLC BenefitsSector: Packaging Distribution The Company Macfarlane Group, the UKs largest packaging distributor has an exciting opportunity to hire a Head of Sustainability. Based at one of our central sites (Coventry/Milton Keynes) but travelling nationally as required, the role shall lead, manage, and drive oursustainability strategy, whilst advising and steering the wider group in all aspects of both environmental & social sustainability. Our focus is to provide our customers with a seamless end-to-end packaging solution that helps to reduce costs and increase efficiencies.The Head of Sustainability Role Reporting to the Company Secretary but working with key and senior stakeholders across the group, you shall be responsible for leading, driving and managing our companys sustainability strategy. You will help set the strategy, leading the discussion and engagementwith business leaders to establish a road map, and set about implementation of initiatives to positively affect both direct operations (i.e., assets, fleet), supply chain organisations, product sustainability, internal and external stakeholder engagement andreporting across sustainability, climate change and ESG matters. You will run and initiate innovative projects and partnerships, motivating the wider team to embed sustainable decision-making and help communicate our vision and progress internally and externally.The day-to-day role primarily focuses on environmental sustainability, however social sustainability is also key.Head of Sustainability Key Responsibilities The role will be far reaching, but just some of the core responsibilities shall include

  • Implement business wide sustainability strategy, covering design, sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, logistics, wholesale, retail, marketing, and buildings as well as Macfarlane premises biodiversity activities
  • Be the internal advisory and expert on all matters relating to environmental and social sustainability
  • Lead the programme management of sustainability-related projects and initiatives, such as waste reduction, renewable energy creation and land purchases for planting/re-wilding projects
  • Support our communications team with internal comms and external comms on the companys progress against its sustainability strategy
  • Run our responsible sourcing due diligence process
  • Enhance environmental data collection for internal, SECR and UN Global Compact reporting, providing analysis and insight
  • Integrate environmental best practice into business processes through education and influence
  • Promote behavioural/cultural change that results in long term environmental impact reduction.
  • Oversee the running of the Environment Management System (EMS) aligned with ISO14001:2015 in conjunction with the H&S manager
  • To develop and oversee implementation of a carbon-neutral strategy for the business
  • Responsible for leading the delivery of our 2025 ambition, ensuring sustainability practices are embedded across all areas of the company and form part of business as usual in the future
  • Construct a governance framework to support the sustainability initiatives
  • Serve as the company spokesperson on sustainability issues externally
  • Promote Green awareness internally
  • Oversee sustainability certifications
  • Calculate and track the bottom-line impact of sustainability interventions
Do you have the correct profile Firstly, you must be an experienced sustainability/environmental professional who will ideally have enjoyed a similar senior role within a larger matrix/multi-site organisation. We would prefer someone with a minimum of five years of experience implementingcorporate sustainability, preferably in-house (but will consider consultancy experience), some key experience of doing so within a transportation/logistics focussed business would be highly advantageous. You will have prior experience running projects acrossclimate change, community, governance, investor relations, reporting and engagement. Additionally, good knowledge of reporting guidelines and frameworks such as GRI, UN Global Compact, SDGs is required. We also require that you are competent in writing businesscases, messaging, report writing, and strategy documents. Relevant professional qualifications/accreditations would be favourable.
