People with a learning disability are 10 times more likely to have serious sight loss than other people and those with severe or profoundlearning disabilities are most likely to have sight loss which hasnt been diagnosed. Many people think that the person they care for can see perfectly well but often this is not the case.Our training will give you specialist skills to understand and support people with a learning disability and sight loss. You will be involved in helping the customer to create their own individual care plan and you will support and encourage developmentof choice, control and confidence.This position requires someone with strong values who can provide emotional, social, personal and physical support. You will enable people to develop new skills and participate in activities of their choice including, baking, sensory interaction, walking,music, art, and other various outings.Job Duties:

  • Support the customer to maximise their abilities and opportunities, considering the nature, impact, and consequences of their sight loss and learning disability/complex needs.
  • Safely support the customer with moving and assisting tasks using equipment such as hoists and wheelchairs as an integral part of the post.
  • Safely administer medication as and when required in accordance with policy and procedures and individual guidelines provided.
  • Support individuals to meet their personally identified outcomes. These outcomes will include skills development such as physical activities, shopping, budgeting and limited domestic duties, e.g., laundry, making light snacks, meals, and hot/cold drinksetc.
  • Ensure the development of good links with the local community and its resources, with a view to customers being able to participate in community life.
  • Identify and act on potential risks to customers, yourself and colleagues, complete risk assessments
  • Uphold confidentiality concerning customers and their carers, whilst following reporting procedures
  • Support the customer with personal care, this might include bathing, support during swimming, such as showering and dressing/undressing, and assisting with continence management.
  • Driving and escorting customers
Required skills/experience:
  • Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of how to support the physical, social and emotional needs, of adults with visual impairment, learning disability and/or complex needs.
  • Ability to undertake a range of activities which support customers with personal care, moving and handling, medication and meal support, as required in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of issues affecting vulnerable adults.
  • Must be aged 21 or over and a driver. If you hold a driving licence you can use a car you have access to. If using your own car, a full clean driving licence with Business Insurance will be required.
  • Must hold or be willing to work towards a relevant SVQ
Desirable
  • Experience of identifying and interpreting risk, and of writing, and applying risk assessments.
  • Previous experience in a care setting.
  • Ability to travel throughout the area/region in a timely fashion to fulfil customer and service requirements.
