Job Description

An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Consultant Radiologist with subspecialty interests in Cardio Thoracic imaging and Non-Vascular Intervention. The post holder will primarily be based at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH). The essential specialist skills must include CT and MR imaging of the full spectrum of both adult congenital and acquired heart disease, as well as emergency cardiothoracic ICU imaging including mechanical circulatory support. A smaller number of sessions are based at University Hospital Monklands (UHM), NHS Lanarkshire, which will require Thoracic Imaging and Non-Vascular Intervention, including thoracic and abdominal biopsy and drainage. The post holder will be accountable to the Medical Director of the GJNH who will also be the Responsible Officer.Golden Jubilee National HospitalThe Golden Jubilee Hospital is a state of the art tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic surgical and interventional cardiology services on the banks of the River Clyde in close proximity to Glasgow International Airport and within 30 minutes of the centre of Glasgow by road and rail links. The West of Scotland Heart and Lung CentreThe Centre was created in March 2008 at the Golden Jubilee Hospital, bringing interventional cardiology and specialist surgical heart and lung services previously provided by other hospitals in the region to the present site. GJNH is a dedicated regional unit for interventional cardiology including primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), device implantation and electrophysiology. With this array of specialist cardiopulmonary services, the GJNH is one of the largest heart and lung centres in Europe.Additionally, the Board hosts three National services; The Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure service (SNAHFs), The Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac service (SACCs), The Scottish Pulmonary Vascular service (SPVUs).NHS Golden Jubilee Radiology Clinical TeamThe radiology department is supported by a team of 23 experienced sessional radiologists from the surrounding Health Boards. They form an excellent clinical support for clinical colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team. Out of Hours reporting and justification is currently outsourced.Consultant Cardiologists & Respiratory Physicians A team of Consultant Cardiologists & Respiratory Physicians also work within the radiology environment providing highly skilled specialist image interpretation and support to the clinical team.Activity The Radiology service performed 81,550 examinations in 2019/20. Of these 52.5% were waiting times activity in the form of CT, MRI, U/S, and Dexa examinations to assist Health Boards across NHS Scotland to reduce waiting times for imaging and comply with the current Scottish Government target of 6 weeks RTT.The remaining 47.5% is based on all in and out-patient activity locally for elective Cardio-Thoracic and Orthopaedic services. Cardiac imaging in 2019/20 performed 1178 cardiac MRI scans, 945 CTCA exams, and 144 TAVI CT planning scans. These provide a Regional service for Health Boards, but also a highly specialist service to the National services of:

  • Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service (SACCS)
  • Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit (SPVU)
  • Advanced heart Failure Unit (AHFU)
  • Cardiology and the Trans Abdominal Vascular Intervention (TAVI ) service
  • There is 24hr provision of plain film and CT imaging, with MRI running 4 scanners extended daysOn-call 7 days a week is covered between 17:00 and 09:00 by an external outsourcing provider, and there is a commitment from GJNH Radiologists to cover 1:14 weekend day on-call from home.NHS LanarkshireIntegrated Health and Social Care PartnershipsLegislation requiring the integration of health and social care came into effect in April 2016.
