Job Description

This role is for an Apprenticeship at Croydon College in Heating and Ventilation (NVQ Level 1 & 2).DescriptionSmith and Byford are looking for an enthusiastic individual to train to become a Commercial Heating & Ventilation Engineer specialising in pipefitting & welding within our Small Works Department. The role includes gaining practical experience alongside established engineers on multiple projects who are primarily involved in the installation of new heating components, pipework repairs, hot and cold-water systems, gas work and welding. The role also provides experience in maintenance, servicing and fault finding of heating systems in a large number of social and private commercial properties. The role includes the opportunity to progress within a well-established growing company with excellent future prospects. Responsibilities The Apprentice’s central task is to assist our Installation Engineersworking on various sites on central heating, cold water and hot water systems. This may involve doing basic tasks such as working with tools and working independently from the Engineer at times on installation tasks that require less skill or experience. As the Installation Apprentice progresses, they will be given more independence in completing tasks.Additional responsibilities will include:

  • To assist fully trained H&V engineers on day to day activities installing Commercial heating equipment e.g Pumps, Pressurisation unit, pipework and repairs and maintenance
  • Work as part of a team and undertake Health and Safety and other training as required
  • Be aware of risk assessments and method statements relating to own area of work and to work in safe manner taking account other people’s health and wellbeing.
  • Learning all procedures for installing Heating systems as per required regulations and safety requirement
  • Assist other departments at Smith and Byford.
  • Academic qualificationsMin 3 GCSEs (Grades A to C) Two of which must be Maths & EnglishDesirable qualificationsMechanical EngineeringElectrical EngineeringPersonal QualitiesAn individual needs to have a good work ethic, the ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own and be keen to learn within a thriving industry. Communication is key as part of our business, therefore great communication skills are a must.Progression route1) College Apprenticeship
  • Apprentice- Year 1&2 - Assisting engineer on daily tasks
  • Apprentice- Year 3&4 - Assisting engineer on welding tasks and carry out small tasks independently
  • 2) Following apprenticeship
  • Improver- Carry out daily work schedules with assistance
  • Pipefitter welder- Carry out all tasks and projects on their own. With obtained site experience
