Job Description

Location : Cardiff, Sale, Croydon and Wakefield only£26,665 (London Weighting Allowance of £4438 will be payable in addition, for roles in Croydon)Cardiff roles / Welsh language skillsPlease note that our client is advertising two separate Trainee Investigator vacancies in Cardiff - this one, for which Welsh language skills are desirable, and a separate one (in Welsh) for which Welsh language skills are essential. You will then be considered for both roles, without you having to submit two applications.As a Trainee Investigator, you will be welcomed into a dynamic and inclusive Investigations team working locally and nationally on a wide range of their investigations. They are on a journey to develop its culture, perspectives and ethos to support the organisationscore outcomes, and this is your opportunity to enter into the varied world of IOPC Investigations, allowing you to develop your mindset and approaches to contribute to improving the police complaints system in England and Wales.You will engage in a structured training programme and develop your skills and knowledge as an investigator, to achieve accreditation. You will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of high quality, robust and independent investigations, demonstratingtheir core values in all aspects of your role.You will be required to complete a 2 year Investigator training programme which includes formal and on the job training. This will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be accredited as an investigator and will consist of assisting with and conducting,a broad range of investigative tasks including but not limited to:- Collecting and analysing evidence including writing reports- Working to stringent guidelines- Witness and subject investigative interviews- Visiting incident scenes where required and assisting in action taken to preserve and recover evidence- Attending post mortems- Taking part in criminal, misconduct and inquest proceedings- Communicating effectively with complainants, bereaved families and other internal and external stakeholders- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team with lawyers, press officers and others- Taking responsibility for your personal development and producing an accreditation portfolio- Shadowing an investigator in the 24 hour on call facility and being prepared to work unsociable and extended hoursWhat you will need- Effective oral and written communication skills, including excellent analytical and report writing skills; ability to reach and document clear, rational, evidence-based and independent decisions- Ability to prioritise and manage tasks effectively to deliver quality outcomes within demanding timescales- Experience with people from diverse backgrounds- Confidence and ability to cope with challenging situations- Ability to analyse information and identify key issuesWhat they offer- 27.5 days paid annual leave (increasing with service to 32.5 days)- options to carry over, buy or sell annual leave- Civil Service pension- Confidential employee assistance programme- Access to Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) membership- Staff networks focussed on each of the protected characteristics - run for staff, by staff- Flexible workingAbout themAs a totally independent body, not part of the police or government, they oversee the police complaints system in England and Wales.
