Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Emergency General and Colorectal Surgery within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to commence as soon as possible for an initial period of 6 months with potential to extend for a further 6 months thereafter.The successful candidate will form part of the emergency on-call rota which is 1 in 8 week-days and 1 in 16 weekends and nights, covering both University Hospital of Wales (UHW) and University Hospital Llandough (UHL) sites. In addition, as the regional major trauma centre for South Wales, commitment to covering the trauma centre on a 1 in 16 basis is also essential.We operate a ‘specialty specific’ on-call system during the week-days and the successful candidate will participate in the lower GI and general surgery emergency rota. There is an additional commitment to providing Consultant presence in the emergency surgery ‘hot clinic’ and participating in ‘amber operating lists’ which are reserved for urgent in-patient / outpatient surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to lead on audit and quality improvement projects within the emergency surgery directorate.The Colorectal Unit is based at UHW for major elective and emergency work. A wide variety of colorectal procedures are undertaken including specialist tertiary work such as laparoscopic colonic resection, transanal endoscopic microsurgery, intestinal failure and pelvic floor. The unit has an active multidisciplinary meeting with all specialties in attendance including geneticists and liver surgeons. There is a dedicated colorectal theatre and a dedicated in-patient ward.The colorectal specialist nurse team comprises six staff members who provide counselling, stoma care (hospital and community) and an anorectal physiology service. Oncology is delivered at our neighbouring Velindre Hospital.The post holder will work with the current Consultants in consolidating the secondary care service for the residents of Cardiff and Vale, contribute to the outpatient clinic workload and lower GI day surgery operating lists. Ability to undertake independent endoscopy lists is essential (JAG certified) and regular lower GI endoscopy lists are included in the job plan. There is a colonic stenting facility and endomucosal resection is regularly performed.Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £91,881 per annum.Applicants must ensure they provide the names and contact details of referees covering at least the last three years of their employment/training history in full.
