The Ionising Radiation Physics (IRP) Section in the Medical Physics Department at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) is seeking an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic leader to take on the challenge of Head of Ionising Radiation. You will have proven experience in leadership and specialised expertise in clinical, scientific and technical services in radio-pharmacy, nuclear medicine, radioactive substances management and radiation safety. You should be an HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist with sufficient experience to work as a Medical Physics Expert for Nuclear Medicine Physics. You should also be able to evidence leadership and project management skills in research and implementation and development of clinical services.The IRP Section includes a busy radio-pharmacy (about 12000 patient administrations a year), planar radionuclide imaging, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with x-ray computed tomography (CT), non-imaging investigations, radionuclide therapy, bone densitometry (DXA) and ultraviolet radiation in UHW and other organisations across south-east Wales. There are also important links with Cardiff University, particularly the School of Physics and Astronomy, the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, including the Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre.The Main Purpose of this post is to provide leadership and management for Ionising Radiation Physics within the Radiology, Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate. The post-holder also provides expert advice on ionising radiation to the UHB. Duties include ensuring compliance with legislation and guidance as regards the following:• Radiopharmaceutical manufacture, quality assurance and release• Radioactive substances management including radioactive waste• Security of radioactive substances• Transport of radiopharmaceuticals and other radioactive materials• Optimisation and radiation dosimetry in nuclear medicine and bone densitometry (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry DXA) including acting as Medical Physics Expert (MPE)• Radionuclide metrology, calibration and quality assuranceThe ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.Closing date: 4th January 2021.For further details / informal visits contact:Kathy IkinE-mail: Kathy.ikin@wales.nhs.ukTel:
