Job Description

Freightserve recruitment are looking for an experienced Transport and Warehouse Manager for a niche sector Freight Forwarder. The role is based in the Cambridge area.-Main purpose of the role will be to lead and manage the central Cambridge Warehouse and Transport function. The role will be part of the UK Operations Management Team and have responsibility for leading and participating in projects focused on process improvement, technology and service delivery in accordance with departmental and operational plans and strategic objectives.Key Responsibilities

  • A skilled people manager, responsible for managing and developing a multi-skilled Transport and Warehouse team, including
  • Setting high expectations for the team, ensuring roles and responsibilities are clear and proactively managing employees to fulfil them
  • Supporting, coaching and mentoring employees to enable them to develop their skills and experience and build their careers within the business
  • Identifying broader Transport and Warehouse challenges and opportunities, proposes solutions and workable implementation plans, communicates with stakeholders and manages change
  • Overall responsibility for effective running of Transport and Warehouse teams, ensuring all day to day functions have been carried out effectively and that any issues escalated are resolved effectively and efficiently, including but not limited to: Warehouse - equipment maintenance equipment, oversight of packaging preparation/ training, working with RP/ Deputy RP / Transport - Advise, mentor and coach the Transport and Warehouse team to ensure effective route planning, ensuring relevant transport systems are up to date and maintained, resolving escalated driver issues, supporting customer service team with client requests and job completion, monitoring driver hours in accordance with working time regulations
  • A member of the UK Operations Management Team responsible for building short to medium term departmental plans and inputting into the overall Operations strategy from a Transport and Warehouse perspective
  • Has a good understanding of current and future business needs and team capabilities. Identifies potential gaps and provides solutions to fill these from a resource and skills perspective
  • Builds positive working relationships with operational and customer service teams in Cambridge and across the other UK sites (Edinburgh, London Heathrow, Warrington). Works closely with own and other teams to align and improve processes, identify and deliver on cost savings and deliver on transport and warehouse projects
  • Is up to date with current and future trends in Transport and Warehouse, brings ideas and expertise internally to develop processes, services and ways of working that fit and meet and exceed internal customer and client expectations
  • Partners with the Transport & Warehouse Support Specialist and other relevant members of staff within to ensure all legal requirements are met in alignment with Road Haulage, Security (CAA/DFT) and GXP Regulations.
  • Ensure driver hours are kept within maximum daily/weekly limits.
  • Ensure Fuel Card spend levels are in alignment with mileages covered.
  • Control the use of sub-contractors to limit spend and ensure as many collections and deliveries and retained in-house where possible.
  • Identifies opportunities for technology improvements e.g. for route planning (including control of fuel costs) and stock management. May lead projects or work as part of wider project teams
  • Participate (when necessary) in client/regulatory and internal audits and manage the follow-up process (including managing any findings or actions).
  • Has a good understanding of Quality standards and works with own team and internal specialists to ensure these are met. Adheres to all aspects of the quality management system
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Significant experience in a Transport and Warehouse environment
  • Proven track record of successfully managing an operation consisting of a Transport & Warehouse team, multiple drivers and fleet of vehicles.
  • Exhibits strong team leadership skills, is a highly positive influence and role model for behaviours and ways of working
  • Experience of (or) familiar with the concept of Process improvements methodologies
  • Experience of GDP / GXP regulations (principles and practice)
  • Experience of Quality management systems
  • High standard of computer literacy with a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Desirable
  • Understanding of cold chain transport processes
  • Knowledge of Dangerous Goods Material Transportation (ADR, IATA, IMDG)
  • Knowledge and understanding of temperature-controlled packaging conditioning and assembly.
  • Experience of managing Temperature Controlled Vehicles.
  • Previous experience with a Specialist Life Science and Pharmaceutical logistics company
  • Experience in import / export processes
  • Previous involvement in the implementation of Transport and Warehouse related software systems (Route planning, stock control / management)
  • Will hold a formal qualification relating directly to the role (including but not limited to Transport Manager CPC, CILT Accreditation, TPP Masters)
