Job Description

Job Title: System AdministratorLocation: CambridgeSalary: £35,000 - £38,500 per annum, depending on qualifications and experienceJob Type: Full Time, PermanentClosing Date: Friday, 20th March, 2020This is an exciting and challenging role, supporting the growing needs of the IT Department and College as a whole. You would be working within a team of seven others, each with their own diverse skills and responsibilities.The Role:This roles primary responsibility will be to maintain and improve the essential system infrastructure of networking, servers and storage. The College has just begun a large project to overhaul its networking across the entire estate, and to replace all of its wired and wireless networking equipment. You would be expected to take this project on and see it to its conclusion over the next two years.You will ideally hold relevant IT qualifications, but most importantly you will have excellent technical abilities and understanding of a range of IT systems, strong communication skills and a desire to deliver the highest possible standards of service. You would be expected to research new technologies and suggest new and alternative ways to improve IT services.Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing Windows domain including Active Directory, DNS, system security, software upgrades and patches etc.
  • Efficient operation of new and existing Windows services such as domain controllers, Microsoft Exchange, printing services etc.
  • All Linux-based servers and services
  • Maintaining and improving the virtual computing infrastructure (Hyper-V)
  • Managing Colleges network, including network security and wireless systems and associated physical infrastructure
  • Ongoing management of local and network storage and associated storage infrastructure
  • Implementing the backup and disaster recovery plans
  • Implementing the system section of any risk reduction plan
  • Assisting the IT Manager with hardware purchasing and maintenance contracts, including servers, storage and workstations
  • Acting as the practical contact for external contractors with regard to system and network installations
  • Actively researching new technologies for possible deployment within the College environment
  • Additional duties
  • Acts as 2nd line support for the end user - supporting the User Support Officer
  • Assisting in general IT operations as and when requested to do so by the IT Manager
  • To network within the University and Colleges system management community through attending seminars, workshops, and presentations
  • Key Requirements:Essential
  • Education to a minimum of A-Level (or equivalent level qualification)
  • Experience with virtual computing
  • Experience with Storage Area Networks
  • Firm knowledge of networking technologies and protocols
  • Experience with managing and configuring firewalls
  • Experience of enterprise wireless networking
  • Firm knowledge and experience of Microsoft Server technologies (Active Directory, DNS, Clustering, Exchange, SQL Server)
  • Experience with Linux server administration
  • Good working knowledge of backup systems
  • Desirable
  • Experience with Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Experience with Aruba network switches and wireless technologies
  • Experience with Palo Alto firewalls
  • Experience with Debian/Ubuntu based Linux systems
  • Knowledge of Windows PowerShell scripting
