Job Description

The department of Discovery Sciences focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.The Cellular Assay Development group is responsible for the generation of novel cellular assays to drive projects in all phases of the drug discovery pipeline.Using your expertise, you will be developing and implementing state of the art cell based screening assays to support Oncology and Neuroscience drug discovery projects. Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivering expertise in the area of high throughput assay development within agreed timelines so project objectives are met.
  • Push the scientific boundaries in the field of cellular assay development in partnership with colleagues in the high-throughput screening and profiling teams, delivering the cell-based assays to drive drug discovery projects.
  • To be an effective member of Drug Discovery Project Teams, contributing novel ideas and using judgment and knowledge to impact project success.
  • To drive your own development by maintaining awareness of current developments in the literature and by finding opportunities in the workplace where improvements can be made.
  • To achieve personal scientific visibility through project contributions and internal presentations at departmental or functional meetings; and external poster & oral conference presentations and authorship on peer-reviewed publications.
  • Essential Candidate Criteria
  • Ph.D in Biology, Pharmacology, Cell biology or a related discipline or a BSc/MSc degree with significant proven experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
  • Strong experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques applied to development of physiologically relevant cellular assays together with expertise in the design, development and validation of cellular assays for compound profiling and screening applications.
  • Expertise in a range of cell biology techniques, including cloning, transfection, gene expression modulation (CRISPR, RNAi) and gene tagging methods.
  • Understanding of the ubiquitin proteasome system and experience in the area of induced protein modulation.
  • A practical understanding of a wide range of cellular assay methods and technologies (for example fluorescence, luminescence, mass spectrometry and target engagement techniques) as applied to a range of biological targets.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, strong delivery focus and communication skills
  • Desirable Candidate Criteria
  • Good publication records in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Research experience in Oncology or Neuroscience
  • Excellent team working and networking skills with experience of interacting effectively across interfaces of subject area, culture, and expertise.
  • Experience of working with external collaborators in both academia and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Discovery Sciences Discovery Sciences applies deep technical expertise in specialist technologies to support the delivery of targets and molecules to the early AstraZeneca pipeline. Targets are identified through our human genomics and functional genomics efforts, employing the latest technologies in genome editing and sophisticated cell model development.
