Job Description

Within the Animal Sciences & Technologies (AST) Department, we support and drive in vivo studies for AstraZeneca in Cambridge. We conduct studies to evaluate the efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics of candidate drugs.Working within the AST team you will apply your scientific and technical expertise to deliver investigative safety in-vivo studies to support the discovery and development of novel potential medicines across AstraZeneca’s core therapeutic areas including Oncology, Respiratory and Immunology, and Cardiovascular Renal & Metabolism) enabling the progression of an expanding drug project portfolio. This is a hands-on vivarium-based role conducting preclinical research to generate data for a wide variety of study types.The role requires an individual with experience in a range of in vivo procedures, alongside the care and wellbeing of laboratory animals. Working independently and as part of a team, you will be required to prioritise your own workload whilst working as part of a cross-functional, multidisciplinary team.This role is in vivo lab based and is ideally suited to a person with either Animal related qualifications, A-levels or a BSc/MSc qualification rather than a PhD qualified Scientist. Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Performs daily animal husbandry tasks for a variety of species, routine facility operations tasks, identifies and reports any abnormal findings, and maintains the highest standards of animal care and welfare. Responsible for daily documentation of tasks performed.
  • Execution of the in-life phase of in vivo studies, performing technical procedures such as administration of test articles, collecting biological samples, as well as more specific functional assessments.
  • Technical review and contribution to the planning and design of in vivo studies and provides general technical and/or scientific advice on specific projects and studies.
  • Preparation of in-life study documentation, and data capture systems in readiness for study execution.
  • Generates clear and complete data sets, including the documentation of raw data in computerised data capturing systems and on hand written records.
  • Contributes to the interpretation of in-life data findings.
  • Handles own work to ensure that agreed targets are met in a timely manner and to agreed quality standards, communicating progress appropriately.
  • May modify or improve processes and systems, depending on purpose of experiments.
  • Be able to lead a small science project or improvement initiative.
  • Assesses and communicates data and trends to department management and project teams.
  • Provides technical instruction to the team and may act as a designated trainer for technical and operational procedures.
  • Liaises with colleagues from other subject areas with the purpose of discussing project-related matters, sharing experiences and reporting progress.
  • Expected to maintain current knowledge in Laboratory animal sciences, e g. through Continued Professional Development (CPD), collaboration with peer scientists or contacts by other internal groups.
  • Searches for information which may improve research methodology and procedures.
  • Ensures that work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Standards (GLS).
  • Is required to work flexibly across different areas and participate in provision of weekend, Bank Holiday and out of hours support.
  • Minimum Education Requirements:
  • A Levels, HNC, HND or equivalent or relevant experience
  • Holds or working towards professional animal related sciences qualifications
  • Essential Knowledge/Experience:
  • Experimental in-vivo skills in a variety of species including rat & mouse
  • Current or past Home Office personal licence holder (modules A-B or 1-3) or equivalent qualification
  • Fully conversant with all aspects of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, Directive 2010/63/EU, associated Home Office guidelines and their implications.
  • Understanding of the principles and concepts associated with own subject/specialist area and an appreciation of the relevant science and literature
  • Problem-solving skills related to in vivo research and data analysis
  • Understanding of the basic principles and concepts in a broad range of technology, or substantial experience in a narrower field of technology
  • Understanding of compliance systems
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluent in verbal and written English language
  • Desirable Knowledge/Experience:
  • Understanding of range of scientific fields within R&D
  • Current or previous experience of preclinical safety/toxicology studies
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry
  • BSc degree or equivalent or relevant experience
