Job Description

We dont limit their capabilities by whats possible from them now but by whats possible from them in the future.The BioPharmaceuticals R&D unit is focused on the discovery and development of the next wave of AstraZeneca’s pipeline, primarily in the CVRM and R&I Therapy Areas. It also has functions which provide support to the delivery of both the BioPharmaceuticals and Oncology Therapy Areas (shared functions). Our finance team is aligned to support the projects and functions in the BioPharmaceuticals R&D unit, with Finance Business Partners providing budgetary control, challenge and strategic insight to these R&D teams. They provide due diligence on investment decisions and support the R&D teams in living their core value - to follow the science.As the Financial Planning & Analysis Lead Business Partner you will provide strong insight and support to the VP Finance of R&D BioPharmaceuticals. You will also establish a strong leadership and influencing role across the finance and broader business team in order to drive the insight and performance of R&D BioPharmaceuticals and delivery against its targets.This will include critical support with planning, consolidation and analysis across both the project and functional cost base (~$2bn). You will also lead the delivery of the R&D business planning processes for R&D BioPharmaceuticals, including providing support to portfolio reviews and giving effective challenge to the broader Finance organisation around delivery of targets.You will also be responsible for regular financial analysis and reporting of actual performance, including driving delivery of the quarterly performance presentations (QBR), monthly financial reporting to the R&D BioPharmaceuticals leadership team and Group finance and consolidation and review of quarterly forecasts.Following the implementation of Finance Transformation there is a great opportunity to further lead and drive value from the suite of tools now available to R&D Finance.This great opportunity offers you direct exposure to understanding the discovery and development of BioPharmaceuticals R&D activity including business issues and strategies and an opportunity to influence senior partners.Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Setting the agenda and calendar for R&D BioPharmaceuticals forecasting and reporting activities
  • Leading the forecasting at both LRP (Long Range Plan) and RBUs (Rolling Business Update)
  • Preparing regular and ad-hoc presentations which are consistent, impactful, clear and insightful. This includes financial analysis supporting the annual and quarterly performance presentations (QBR), annual LRP review presentation, quarterly forecast updates and monthly performance presentations for R&D BioPharmaceuticals
  • Providing analysis with regards to key R&D performance measurements (KPIs and Financial Metrics) and look for ways to make improvements against these
  • Challenging and drive the wider Finance team to drive delivery of targets
  • Looking for opportunities to simplify and standardise processes and procedures wherever possible and share learning with the FP&A team and wider R&D finance team
  • Drive further embedding and improvements on finance transformation implementation
  • Setting functional targets alongside the VP Finance by collaborating with functional finance business partners to understand the risks and opportunities around forecasts and providing a consolidated view across all functions to help manage overall target delivery and drive corrective actions
  • Supporting the delivery of the R&D Planning Process in-line with corporate requirements and R&D business needs including preparation of clear expectations and assumptions, communications and timetables, and supporting the delivery of the Review Meeting process for R&D
  • Working with the portfolio team in supporting the review process and leading the project cost forecasting, including attrition and slippage modelling in order to provide the VP with a consolidated view across all projects
  • Supporting with ad-hoc analysis and business cases as they arise. This may include restructuring programs, target re-setting, cost base analysis
  • Key skills and capabilities required to be successful in this role are:
  • Qualified finance professional - ACA, CIMA, ACCA
  • Must be experienced in leading Financial Planning & Analysis activity, and driving the process with senior stakeholder engagement
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Understanding of the drug development life cycle and/or commercial aspects in Pharma
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural team
  • You will enjoy working under pressure and have a flexible mindset.
  • Working to tight deadlines, you will be able to collate and analyse data whilst identifying key drivers
  • You will need to be a strategic thinker who enjoys a challenge and is able to influence decisions
  • Your presentation and communication skills will be excellent, thus enabling you to be able to present both impactful and easily understandable financial data and associated recommendations to a financial and non-financial audience
