Job Description

We have a fantastic opportunity to join us as an Online Learning Editor based in Cambridge. You will join us on either a full time or part time, 12 month fixed term contract covering maternity and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £26,000 - £31,400 per annum, depending on experience plus benefits.The National Extension College (NEC) is an educational charity based in Cambridge, which is part of the Open School Trust. NEC has provided tutor supported distance learning courses directly to learners for over 50 years, and also publishes learning resources for colleges and training providers.We offer fantastic benefits to our Online Learning Editor:- 23 days annual holiday (plus 4 days Xmas shutdown)- Healthcare- Group life scheme- Employee discount on NEC courses- Training and development opportunitiesKey duties of our Online Learning Editor:- Project manage course updates to ensure that learning material remains up-to-date and of the highest quality- Manage and maintain editorial version control systems and processes with IT and other course developers- Design and manage projects to ensure they are completed on time and within budget- Design, build and maintain courses for learn@nec- Create print versions of online resources for prisoners and tailor course guides and other information accordingly- Manage and maintain print processes, including continuing the setup of a recent move to a new print service- Create files for the resource customers who license NEC courses or materials- Act as internal point of contact for staff and external suppliers regarding course development and editorial projects- Manage and maintain license agreements and orders for eBooks and other external course resources- Edit and proofread as required- Proactively manage the contracts and relationships with internal staff and external suppliers- Provide leadership to those team members working remotely- Line manage the Editorial Assistant- Brief staff fully on any changes to existing courses and the features of new courses through briefing documents and face to face information sharing- Monitor how students and tutors respond to the courses as they work through them. Elicit feedback, especially for new coursesWhat we are looking for in our ideal Online Learning Editor: - An editorial background, a relevant degree and significant demonstrable experience of elearning technologies and environments- Excellent understanding of design and development of digital courses with tutorial support for both desktop and mobile platforms- An understanding of and commitment to NEC’s mission is important along with knowledge and experience of the GCSE, A level and vocational qualifications that the College provides- Be able to demonstrate effective collaboration with subject matter experts, editors, graphic designers, video producers and otherYou will also possess the following skills and experience: Qualifications and experience:- Experience of designing, building and maintaining learning material using a Moodle based platform; ideally being a Moodle enthusiast, confident in its management and development- Experience designing interactive course elements, e.g. using H5P- Ability to design and deliver learning material utilising appropriate rapid authoring tools (e.g. Evolve)- Excellent editorial and writing skills with meticulous attention to detail- Project management skills – able to identify the key issues on which to focus energy and effort with good communication and liaison skills to ensure projects are completed on time- A relevant degree and editorial qualifications highly desirable.Professional skills and competencies:- Comfortable working on a number of different projects at any given time and liaising with external partners as and when necessary- Intelligence and excellent attention to detail in all aspects of project management- Ability to act as a bridge between non-technical staff, tutors, learners and technology; ensuring the best technical solutions are delivered in order to convert learner needs into the most appropriate and relevant course design- A sense of humour and the confidence to communicate and collaborate with other team members with different expertise- Willing to maintain a high quality professional service, ensuring all work promotes NEC’s aims and objectives- Good decision making skills – able to identify key issues and actions required- Team player – able to work with remote development teams and support those in-house also contributing to a projectIf you have the skills required to become our Online Learning Editor, click ‘apply’ today to submit your CV and covering letter – we would love to hear from you!Closing date: 24th August 2020Cover letter set out:- What appeals to you about the role- The fundamental skills and experience you would be able to bring to the role- The support and development you would need to be successful- Current salary- Notice period (if relevant)- If you live outside of Cambridge, would travel be an issue (where applicable)Please note, without a covering letter your application will not be considered.
