Job Description

Machine Learning Engineer | Biotechnology | Cambridgeshire |Hybrid | Up to £80,000 DOEAre you an experienced Machine Learning Engineer, motivated to create a genetically safer futureAs a Machine Learning Engineer, you will have the opportunity to be involved with the research and analysis of a unique unbiased data set, generated by several world-leading cell and gene therapy companies.Furthermore, you will get the chance to utilise your Machine Learning experience with this powerful dataset and create predictive models helping to understand the most effective therapies.Machine Learning Engineer Role & Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse datasets that record the location and frequency of double-strand breaks (DSB) using machine learning algorithms and models.
  • Find out if the DSB locations can be predicted using the data. The goal will be to predict where induced breaks are formed when using CRISPR-Cas systems, comparing on-target and off-target induced breaks against endogenous breaks.
  • Evaluating the models to see which has the best performance, eliminating problems such as over-fitting.
  • Assess the applicability of the best performing models in expanding the range of gene editing methods.
  • Use a data manipulation and reconfiguration approach to make the bioinformatics pipeline data outputs more human-readable by transforming them into the most readable formats and making lucid graphing and visualisations.
  • Calculation of the results statistical significance.
Machine Learning Engineer Essential Requirements:
  • 5 or more years of experience in Machine Learning or relevant biomedicine/genetics industry.
  • A thorough understanding of supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches. In addition to SVMs, random forests, and deep learning should be considered.
  • Experience applying machine learning to real-world datasets derived from scientific experiments, including assessing the suitability of multiple models and applying the best performance to new datasets.
  • Knowledge of and experience with machine learning libraries such as Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch and/or Scikit-learn.
  • Experience using Python (pandas, seaborn) and/or R libraries (tidyverse, ggplot2) for cleaning, reshaping, and visualizing data.
  • A thorough understanding of statistical approaches and methods and how to use them to evaluate datasets and evaluate observations in them.
  • Strong communicator, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across a wide range of disciplines and communicate concepts to external collaborators.
Desirable
  • Having formal education in biology or working within the field.
  • An understanding of genomics and the application of next-generation sequencing (NGS) to gain biological insights.
  • A working knowledge of CRISPR genome editing methods and data
  • Strong programming ability in Python
  • Familiarity with cloud computing, preferably AWS
