Conservation Software Developer - Ruby on Rails / JavascriptLocation: Cambridge, flexible - quarterly office visits, maybe fully remote.Salary: Up to £42K (+12% pension, healthcare and more)Biodiversity needs a global effort to repair the damage caused by human activity.Theres lots of ways technology can be utilised to turn the tide in the fight to prevent mass extinction and further destruction of our natural world.This organisation work with of governments, institutes, companies and orgs globally to build solutions that improve the chances of positive outcomes.From maintaining critical databases and expanding services to deliver detailed insights and data modelling. Or building tools for niche purposes, such as utilising remote sensors to track growth of reforestation and using mapping tech to make planning infrastructureprojects more efficient.Governments are scrambling to understand how valuable biodiversity really is and how it intersects with their economic plans, questioning whether a diverse forest is more commercially or socially valuable than an oil rig or palm-oil plantation How do you evenmeasure thatThe aim [of the organisation] is to be more proactive in creating software and services that others can use and feed into to better deliver on their goals. Building bridges to accelerate conservation worldwide.A lot of their projects have geospatial and mapping elements built in, so experience with GIS tools and data is handy. And most of their software is built with Ruby on Rails and Javascript, so experience with one of those is a must. They also use Python, MySQL,GraphQL, PostgreSQL and Github, working in an Agile environmentAs a senior dev youll have a small team of 3-4 people whom you support, coaching them and doing code reviews, peer programming and testing so they can see and learn from how you an others tackle problems.Youll also get involved in some more complex tasks like discussions on architecture and tooling, estimations for projects and assigning tasks within your team.Theyll also support you in your development. Its not just about what you can give, theyll ask what you need to advance your skills too. Whether thats paying for courses, textbooks, conferences - or guidance from the head of tech whos incredibly knowledgeable.Youll facilitate tangible benefits for economies and social progress that in the longer-term will reduce our dependency on problematic resources such as fossil fuels!Ideally, youll be a fullstack developer but a front or backend focus is fine too, so long as youre open to rounding off your skills in the longer term.Youll work with scientists and researchers to design, build and implement tools.
