Job Description

Bioinformatics data scientist for growing company in Cambridge, project leadership, R & python, omics data Your new companyIs a rapidly growing pharmaceutical data & bioinformatics company in the Cambridge area, providing bespoke solutions to a range of clients within the pharmaceutical, biotech and genomics fields, using a range of pipelines, software and data analysis tools to make a big difference to their clients, working with multi-omics and clinical trial data sets to fast-track a range of programmes. The company has bright, well-equipped, open plan offices and a collaborative and warm corporate atmosphere, as well as a strong home/remote working culture.Your new roleYou will be joining an enthusiastic and talented team, finding data science and bioinformatics problems / challenges across multiple industries and solving them / creating bespoke solutions. As well as working with clients to solve their specific issues you will be finding opportunities to utilise internal and develop new approaches, systems and platforms. For more experienced candidates there is scope to input into strategy and company development plans.Major responsibilities include:

  • Identifying opportunities to solve scientific and technical problems using the companys software platform and novel approaches developed by you;
  • Technical and scientific problem solving through a range of computational methods;
  • Working closely with collaborators and clients in multiple companies to understand their issues and roll out solutions;
  • Hands-on programming / scripting in languages such as R, Python, Java, etc;
  • Providing training and ongoing support to internal teams and clients on data science and/or bioinformatics issues & queries;
  • Data wrangling, transformation and integration of large / diverse data sets (primarily biological / omics data);
  • Building relationships with clients for future business, eg through presenting at conferences.
    • This is a fast-paced environment where you will need to deal with people at all levels, from developers through to senior management/C-level executives.What youll need to succeedAs well as excellent analytical, organisational and team-working skills, you will need to have an innovative approach to problem solving and be able to work both independently and as part of a larger team.You should have a degree (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, computational chemistry, physics, statistics, mathematics, biology, genetics or a related field.Experience with biological or clinical data, eg from hands-on analysis and/or genomics, drug discovery (eg assay or screening services) or bioinformatics would be a significant advantage.You will also need:
  • A good understanding of genomic, biological, pharmaceutical, clinical or similar research, from either academia or industry work experience;
  • The ability / knowledge to apply and optimize statistical or Machine Learning methods & packages;
  • Good data wrangling skills, with scripting experience;
  • Knowledge of biological / omics or clinical data formats, eg VCF, FASTQ, BAM, SDTM, etc
  • Hands-on experience with biological data systems / software, bioinformatics, drug discovery or similar software;
  • An aptitude for creative problem solving, especially within technical problems.
