Job Description

Major Healthcare is a specialist recruitment consultancy, providing quality permanent, contract and temporary staffing solutions to clients from our wide network of UK offices.We are currently looking to recruit a passionate, self-motivated Band 6 Childrens Speech & Language Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team based in London. You will be providing a speech and language therapy service to clients and their families. They will work with a mixed paediatric caseload who have a range of speech, language and communication needsin clinics, mainstream schools, specialist provisions and special schools.Key Responsibilities but not restricted too:

  • Responsible for the management, assessment and treatment of the children in these caseloads, but with the support of peers and more senior colleagues. You will have the opportunity to develop your clinical skills at a specialist level.
  • Contribute to new service developments and in-service training within the department, provide training to colleagues from other organisations and take responsibility for the supervision of students and more junior staff.
  • Develop and provide a specialised speech and language therapy service to patients referred with communication and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Make a differential diagnosis based on evidence from assessment, leading to decisions about intervention/treatment.
  • Communicate complex condition related information, from assessment to patients/clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions.
  • Maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of patients/clients and their carers, in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the patient/clients difficulties and implications of the same.
  • Negotiate and work closely with patients/clients, carers, families, and other professionals, agreeing decision- making and prioritisation relevant to the patient/clients management, devising agreed care plans based on best practice, seeking advice frommanager/supervisor for more complex cases.
  • Initiate and provide a variety of treatment options according to patients needs, including the use of interpreters as appropriate.
  • Use forms of alternative and augmentative communication e.g. signing, symbols, speech synthesisers as indicated from assessment to maximise the clients communication.
  • Demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and families and colleagues, aiming to achieve effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
  • Adapt practice to meet individual patient/ client circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic and gender differences.
  • Form productive relationships with clients who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties.
  • Monitor and review the progress of clients of increasing complexity within packages of care against the targets set and agreed and to modify targets as appropriate.
  • Provide health education and health promotion as needed related to communication and eating/swallowing disorders.
  • Demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and to evaluate outcomes of developing specialist interventions.
  • Maintain up to date and accurate patients case notes in accordance with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist professional standards and company policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Write reports and care plans as needed, reflecting developing specialist knowledge as necessary.
  • Ensure that clients are referred to other services, with their consent, as appropriate, ensuring appropriate specialised information is communicated.
  • Develop and maintain a specialised clinical expertise, consulting with more senior specialist speech and language therapists as necessary.
  • Be aware of legal requirements relating to the provision of a speech and language therapy service.
  • Manage and prioritise a defined caseload and work load independently. e.g. within stroke rehabilitation or a particular clinic.
  • Provide advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication and/or feeding/swallowing difficulties.
  • Demonstrate skills in dealing with complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognise potential and real conflict and negotiate solutions.
  • Deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible in line with company policy and procedures.
Successful Candidates must have:
  • Degree or a post-graduate diploma in Speech & Language Therapy
  • HCPC registered
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • UK driving Licence and access to own vehicle
