Internal candidates/existing civil servants should refer to the Further Information document for salary details.Job descriptionAre you fascinated by innovative technology and excited by the opportunity to work first hand on military platforms and systems Our team is looking for experienced Engineers to be responsible for above and below water weapons, gunnery, missile systems,ordnance, munitions and explosives. As part of the team, youll be responsible for the provision of combat systems capability across all our platforms.These unique and exciting roles will support the team for all matters related to the upkeep, update and upgrade of the Ships Combat Systems; managing magazine safety and the integration of weapon systems into platforms. Using your technical expertise, youllensure aspects such as risk management and safety management are adequately addressed to meet the customers requirements.Please note, the successful applicants will be required to undertake detached duty visits within the UK, and occasionally overseas.ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you will provide specialist technical advice and assistance to a variety of key stakeholders across the organisation, liaising across multiple business areas to ensure the risks associated with combat systems on board ships is captured andeffectively managed.The responsibilities of these posts will include, but not be limited to, the following:* Managing integration of all weapon elements onto ships* Writing safety submissions for issue to the Naval Authority for the certification of all combat systems on board ships, including the building of safety arguments* Managing safety risk on ships through life* Scoping/surveying ships for Alterations and Additions (A&As) related to combat systems* Managing A&As to produce designs against agreed standards to provide safe and suitable solutions for weapons across the fleet* Supporting ships in refit by attending inspections, providing advice and guidance to inspectors and ship staffCareer progression and further development is actively encouraged at DE&S and in these roles, there will be ample opportunity to undertake additional training courses as required.What you will be assessed againstTo be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:* Hold a relevant Level 4 (e.g. HNC, or higher) qualification in an Engineering or Science discipline, or have equivalent relevant experience* Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes* Technical experience, or knowledge, of combat systems, such as weapons, ordnance, munitions, explosives, or similarIt will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:* Experience from a maritime defence environmentIn addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:* Technical Requirements, Evaluation & Acceptance* Technical Risk Management* Communicating and influencing* Making effective decisionsSecuritySuccessful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed.
