Job Description

The roleAs Advisor (concrete and materials), you will provide specialist and complex technical advice and guidance to support the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and modernisation of the Strategic Road Network (SRN). You will contribute to National Highwaysasset management transformation/change programme, as well as promoting best practice in design, construction, operation and management of our highway structures assets. The role reports to the regional Principal Structures Advisor/Team Leader for SES.This is a great opportunity to develop your career within the technical management of highway structures, working with industry leading experts who are dedicated to quality, safety and making a meaningful contribution to the users of the SRN.This role can be based in any of our primary office locations (Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Bedford, Guildford, Bristol or Exeter) and offer flexible working arrangements. Most Advisors are currently adopting a blended homeworking / office-based approach,typically spending 1-2 days per week working in a regional office. These posts also offer the opportunity to apply for compressed hours working, in which contractual hours are worked over fewer working days (e.g. nine day fortnight).What youll be leading on

  • Apply your expertise in concrete and construction materials to solve a range of bridge and other highway structure engineering problems
  • Provide authoritative specialist advice to colleagues across the wider business including Operations and Major Project teams and to industry suppliers
  • Support National Highways programme for lowering carbon associated with construction and maintenance involving concrete and other construction materials
  • Provide technical steering and governance relating to use of concrete and construction materials including lower carbon concrete by contributing to the development of guidance, standards, specifications and by giving scrutiny to new proposals
  • Continue to develop knowledge and keep abreast of latest and emerging low carbon concrete and materials technologies including literature searches of published information and reviewing outputs of internal and external research, pilots and trials
  • Liaise with construction materials industry including concrete manufacturers and provide advice on performance and testing requirements including for new low carbon materials
To be successful
  • You will have significant technical knowledge of construction materials, primarily concrete, either from extensive industry experience or high-level academic study such as a post-graduate qualification (PhD or equivalent in a subject related to constructionmaterials with an emphasis on concrete).
  • You will be able to demonstrate good general knowledge of civil engineering and construction practice relating to the design, construction and maintenance of structures including bridges and highway structures, especially reinforced concrete structures
  • You will be able to demonstrate in-depth technical knowledge of materials for reinforced concrete construction including knowledge of: concrete constituents, concrete chemistry, admixtures and cement additives, other cementitious materials (such as GGBS,fly ash, limestone, pozzolana etc..) and properties of reinforcement.
  • You will have strong networking and communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and present results.
  • You will demonstrate a willingness to develop your own knowledge and professional development
