Job Description

Job Title: Commercial ManagerLocation: Bristol or Plymouth basedRef: SF31921Main purpose of roleDefence Systems Technology (DST) forms a critical, and growing part of Babcocks Marine organisation. Our dynamic and motivated leadership team is committed to an exciting transformation agenda that will help DST to innovate, modernise and create a more people-focussed business that can support our customers mission. Working across a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects, DST employs approximately 1,500 people across the UK and overseas with the largest sites based in Bristol, Plymouth, Leicester, Portsmouth and Ashchurch.Across all of our contracts in DST our Commercial Managers make a difference every day in the following ways: managing existing contracts, undertaking negotiations, pricing activities and dynamic contractual risk assessments along with supporting tender and organic growth activities at every level to achieve our customers mission.We are looking for someone to join our team and support our drive to transform DST by delivering innovative and pragmatic commercial solutions for our customers, and our business. The role offers a wide variety of development and personal growth opportunities, and we are looking for people who thrive in a dynamic operating environment, are not afraid of responsibility, who can challenge the norm/raise the bar and who work collaboratively with project teams, stakeholders and our partners to achieve the best commercially position possible - whilst enjoying a fun and exciting culture!This role will be working within our Complex Assets business stream, part of the Mission Systems business unit to drive the business and contracts forward by:• Providing contract management and governance support to project teams in the fields of Gunnery Support, Marine Asset Support and Air Defence• Undertaking negotiations and pricing activities in support of organic or new growth opportunities• Identify and implement pragmatic commercial solutions to achieve a win:win• Create and execute commercial strategies to achieve success• Leading a team of commercial staff• Acting as the commercial point of contact for any and all queries from the project team - every day is different here!• Mentoring and providing training to other commercial staff, sharing best practice, advice and providing recommendations to commercial scenarios• Providing support to the Head of Commercial and Head of Programmes for Mission SystemsAs well as working within the Mission Systems business stream, you will also be part of the wider DST Commercial Team with plenty of opportunities for development, learning and training as well as continuing to build your professional network!This exciting opportunity will suit someone who is a diligent, resilient and tenacious team player, who wants to collaborate with us on our challenging yet extremely rewarding journey whilst making a positive impact on our business!Who were looking for• A strong collaborator with a customer focus for whom working in partnership comes naturally.• An innovative thinker wholl bring big ideas and solve complex problems with simple and elegant solutions.• Someone who wants to make a positive impact on a daily basis.• Someone who is courageous - who will continuously champion high performance, challenge the status quo, and speak up when we need to do better.• An adaptable individual who can navigate change easily, is curious about what the future holds and seeks out learning and development opportunities• Someone who is as committed as we are to building an enjoyable, and supportive culture, and who actively seeks out and values different perspectives.• Experience - what we are looking foro Someone with experience of managing and understanding contracts in matrix organisations from across industries. Defence experience would be desirable but not essential;o Strong technical skills and experience across a range of contract models and demonstration of the ability to undertake and manage commercial risks and opportunities in support of delivery and growth activities along with contractual negotiations (T&Cs).o Demonstrated experience in identifying commercial innovation opportunities, with sound business awareness of customers and competitors;o Understanding of and experience with the creation of proposals whether as organic growth or for new opportunities;o Demonstrated experience working within a dynamic and sometimes pressurised operating environment with the ability to deliver to deadlines;o Experience of project management and prioritising deliverables to independently manage concurrent and multiple business change projects and day to day operations simultaneously;o Preferably a balance of public and commercial sector experience in a customer-facing and supplier-facing role; ando A strong track record of leading and inspiring people at all levels.• Education and qualifications:o Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Engineering, Business, Law, Accountancy desireable but not essential. Functional qualifications achieved, or would be willing to work towards, may include Membership of Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (MCIPS), International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM) or Post Graduate Certificate in Commercial Management (PGCCM)What else do I need to know• All applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK and be subject to satisfactory security clearance which includes 3 years reference checks.
