Job Description

Closing Date - 22nd November 2020In July 2022, Birmingham will host the XXII Commonwealth Games, the largest multi-sport event to be held in England in 10 years. Approximately 6,500 athletes and team officials from 72 nations and territories across the Commonwealth will come together in a 12-day celebration of sport and culture. Events will take place across Birmingham and the West Midlands, entertaining more than one million ticketed spectators and reaching a global broadcast audience of more than one billion.This role requires a talented legal professional, working as an integral part of the Legal team, to assist in the delivery of a full range of commercial law support to all areas of the Organising Committee in order to minimise exposure and contractual risk and to achieve compliance with legislation and regulations. It will involve the provision of pro-active and pragmatic advice on all legal matters for the organisation and staging of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in a fast-paced environment. This is a key role within the Organising Committee.Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the provision of high quality legal support to staff at all levels on all aspects of commercial law in connection with the Organising Committee.
  • Advising on legal issues which may arise in relation to any aspect of the Games, including disputes, legislation, compliance, governance and related matters at various internal and external forums as required by the Chief Legal Officer, Senior Legal Counsel and other Organising Committee staff.
  • Drafting and negotiating a high volume of different types of commercial contracts, including leading on the negotiation and drafting of a number of venue use agreements for the Games for sporting, village and cultural venues.
  • Where required, assisting and leading on a number of procurements for the purchase of essential goods and services for the Games.
  • Working with the Games delivery unit at the Department of Digital Media Culture and Sport in relation to the implementation of Regulations under the Birmingham Commonwealth Games Act.
  • Assisting with the drafting of funding agreements between the Organising Committee and other Games Partners.
  • Advising on key contract terms, technology issues and contract compliance to ensure that the OC is not exposed to undue risk and that consistent business standards are adhered to
  • Assisting with advice on resolution of contractual claims and disputes (not including conduct of litigation or arbitration), using external lawyers where appropriate.
  • Working with the brand protection manager in the provision of general advice on intellectual property rights including copyright, trademarks and protection of the Games branding, including drafting and negotiation of intellectual property licence agreements.
  • Providing legal training in coordination with the Organising Committees official legal services provider to staff on the impact of legal policies, procedures, legislation and contractual arrangements.
  • Required ExperienceEssential
  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister in England or Wales with current practicing certificate
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, the ability to influence others and manage relationships and to identify and adapt communications to suit the relevant audience.
  • Ability to balance legal risk and exposure with a practical and pragmatic mindset. To be flexible in solving legal queries and issues whilst protecting the company against exposure.
  • Ability to apply a common-sense approach to work which takes account of non-legal objectives of the wider business.
  • Accurate legal drafting skills with attention to detail and resolution based legal thinking.
  • Experience in advising in demanding projects simultaneously with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience in providing quality legal advice, drafting, negotiating and managing contracts.

  • Demonstrable track record of working within a multidisciplinary team on a wide range of commercial law issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges facing the delivery of a major sport event and the role of the in-house function as a key contributor to successful delivery.
  • Experience of working on Legal related matters as part of a team in an event, major sport, federation or other sports related industry would be highly regarded.
