Job Description

Our values: RespectfulCaringWelcomingContinuously improvingWe have an opportunity available for a Research Intern to join us on a 6 month fixed term contract based in Birmingham City Centre (some homeworking is also available). This Research Intern role involves working alongside the Head of Services to carry out research to inform the feasibility study which will explore how Servol can develop a specialistintegrated approach to resettlement for people living with enduring mental health conditions who are leaving prison.On release from prison, finding accommodation, work and maintaining relationships with family and friends is challenging. This can createa continuum with many returning to prison repeatedly. We believe an effective resettlement strategy is likely to lead to greater engagement with the resettlement plan as well as greater compliance if it is co-produced.Servol Community Services is a charity providing person-centred support to adults affected by and recovering from mental health conditions in Birmingham and London. We have been established for over 40 years and proudly support people inaccommodation that meets their support needs, including residential 24 hour staffed services and semi-supported accommodation. We are a friendly organisation that provides variety, challenge and a real opportunity for progression and continued learning &development.Key responsibilities of our Research Intern:

  • Work with the Head of Services to develop a quantitative and qualitative research model
  • Design and facilitate focus groups to be delivered as both prison in-reach and out-reach, working with offenders and ex-offenders
  • Develop professional networks with partners within the Criminal Justice System
  • Support the Head of Services with the preparation of the feasibility study
  • This is not an exhaustive list of your duties.
Skills and experience required to become our Research Intern: Servol is looking for an intern who is keen to obtain some practical research experience and work with on this new initiative. This post would ideally suit someone with an understanding of research techniques with a background in Sociology, Criminologyor Criminal Justice.Essential skills and experience are:
  • Proficient use of a variety of IT systems including Microsoft Office and bespoke case management systems
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to manage challenging situations
  • Excellent written skills with the ability to produce reports at a professional standard
  • Working knowledge and implementation of equality and diversity legislation and best practice
  • Demonstrate a practical and adaptable approach to work
  • To be organised and proven experience of working within deadlines
  • Demonstrate a values-driven approach that match the organisational values
