Job Description

Can you help the UK achieve Net ZeroOur client was set up in 2016 to accelerate the transformation of the UKs energy system and ensure UK businesses and consumers capture the opportunities of clean growth. It is an independent, not-for-profit centre of excellence that bridges the gap between industry, government, academia, and research employing around 250 people and expanding rapidly. They take a whole systems view of the energy sector, helping them to identify and address innovation priorities and market barriers, in order to decarbonise the energy system at the lowest cost. They believe a single national approach to decarbonisation is unlikely to be the most effective, and instead different areas are likely to require different approaches that take account of their local infrastructure, opportunities and ambitions. They are looking for a talented and motivated modelling analyst to join their growing Modelling team focusing on local or city scale energy modelling using their EnergyPath Networks tool to understand how best to decarbonise these local energy systems.Working with the existing local modelling team, you will be both applying our tools to generate insight for local areas, but also potentially contributing to new models and the development of new functionality or approaches to analysis. You will help to ensure the quality of model data and to verify outputs. Throughout the role you will develop an understanding of a range of local low carbon technologies and work to appropriately represent them in models. There may also be the opportunity to work with their suite of other modelling tools including ESME (national modelling), Home Energy Dynamics (buildings) and to help develop new tools to solve future challenges. You will enjoy working in a fast moving and changing environment at the cutting edge of innovation. You will be able to apply your analytical skills to work collaboratively in analysing complex whole system problems. You will be passionate about energy andclimate change and able to work independently and within multi-disciplinary teams on wide variety of projects. What credentials are we ideally looking for

  • The ability to use modelling to deliver analysis, with an attention to detail to ensure high quality.
  • Experience in model development, which may have included designing and developing new modelling approaches or adding new functionality to existing tools.
  • Experience in using a variety of software tools and packages for modelling and data analysis, which could include some of Python, R, SQL, Visual Basic, MATLAB and a willingness to learn new ones as required.
  • Excellent numeracy skills - comfortable analysing and manipulating large data sets with an ability to explain complex analysis and issues to others.
  • The ability to clearly communicate technical topics.
  • Experience of handling spatial data, potentially with Geographic Information System (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS would be useful.
  • Energy sector knowledge or experience would be an advantage but we welcome applications from wider backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated with ability to take initiative and ownership of work, comfortably dealing with ambiguity and responding positively to changing priorities or setbacks.
  • Educated to at least degree level
The role is based Birmingham and we envisage that that you would be expected to attend the office one or two days a week with the rest working from home, its an agile working pattern you can pick your hours as long as the work gets done!Salary is around £30,000 plus benefits. To find out more or for a confidential chat - please send your CV to Gary Simpson
