Job Description

Your new roleHere at National Highways, we have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Power BI Developer top join the Major Projects Delivery Services (MPDS), ideally, based out of Birmingham, Leeds or Bedford.Within this role you will report to the Business Reporting & Systems Lead and your main responsibility will be managing the Azure & Power BI platforms for MP.The role is responsible for publishing reports into the live environment and signing off work completed by other developers. Day to day the team are responsible for managing a reporting cycle to refresh multiple data sets and developing new reports throughcapturing business requirements, and making changes to existing reports to meet specific business requirements using the MP automated reporting platform.What you will be leading on

  1. Management of the Azure data model and Power BI / and design - Ensuring Azure data model and Power BI is managed to operate effectively to meet business reporting requirements and the design is in line with agreed documentation lodged with IT. Any changesto the design are agreed through IT change control process. Responsible for all technical documentation.
  2. Refresh of reports within production environment - Responsible for the daily refresh of multiple data sets in accordance with the reporting drumbeat cycle. Ensuring any load failures are rectified as a priority and stakeholders are kept informed of anyissues with the availability of Power BI reports.
  3. Technical expert for new system/ data connections - Lead for technical elements of establishing new system connections or SQL work required for new data sets. Responsible for overseeing the work of outside contractors (as and when needed) to establish anylinks.
  4. Requirements capture - Member of the weekly review panel to capture, validate and assess business requirements submitted by MP teams to determine if and how they can be incorporated into the standard Power BI reports. This includes determining the effortto develop each requirement and supporting the prioritisation of requirements process within MP. The lead developer is also the technical representation at the MP Reporting Community of Practise (CoP).
  5. Develop new and updated standard reports - Lead a team to develop changes to existing standard reports and develop new reports in accordance with the agreed requirements, using an agile development process and through engagement with business stakeholdersacross MP, e.g. programme directors, programme reporting leads and project managers. Development scope includes Power BI for the user front-end, SQL Server for the data hub and Azure for the data integration.
  6. Ad-hoc reports and data discovery - Develop one-off, ad-hoc reports according to business requirements, and undertake data discovery in order to support MP in responding to business queries using the Power BI and SQL server data hub.
  7. Bugfix and issue resolution - Investigate, analyse and fix any defects or issues in the automated reporting platform. Make improvements to the automated reporting processes where required.
  8. Testing - Test and assure changes to the automated reporting platform, including the Power BI, SQL Server and Azure components, including testing of new standard and ad-hoc reports, and changes to existing reports, to provide assurance or the accuracy ofthe reports.
  9. Maintain components library - Overall responsibility of the Components Library to ensure Power BI developer/ reporting analysts are regularly maintaining the components library with an up to date view of all components implemented in the automated reportingplatform. Lead developer will be the single point of contact for queries relating to components used in the digital reports to provide clarity on the calculations and underlying data used in any of the components.
  10. Training - Provide technical training on the automated reporting platform to other team members who need to develop ad-hoc reports or undertake data discovery. Building capability within the team to ensure cover is in place for critical tasks.
  11. Final Sign off - The Lead developer will have access rights to publish reports and are responsible for ensuring the standard or work carried out by others meets the necessary design and technical requirements before publishing.
To be successful:
  • Demonstrable experience of designing and developing digital reports using Microsoft Power platform including PowerBI and PowerApps
  • Demonstrable experience of using SQL Server 2008 - 2016 databases
  • Demonstrable experience of developing pipeline and connections in Azure datafactory.
  • Experience developing API connections to a range of source systems
  • Demonstrable experience of data management (e.g. permissions, recovery, security and monitoring)
  • Familiar with a project and programme environment and the associated coding and breakdown structures (WBS, CBS)
  • Experience deploying Power BI within the Microsoft Azure cloud environment
  • Operational experience of working in a complex programme and project environment
  • Experience of training and/or coaching others to develop and improve Business Intelligence development skills
  • Strong management skills able to use agile methodologies to manage workload of developers.
  • High resilience, to deal constructively conflicting priorities and setbacks.
  • Excellent communicator, to clarify and ensure understanding of requirements, information requests, designs and solutions
