Job Description

£55,000 to £60,000 plus BenefitsBirmingham, West MidlandsFull-Time or 80% Part-TimeThe Head of Finance is one of five members of the Senior Management Team (SMT). The SMT works closely together overseeing the commercial and business activities of the centre as mutually supportive and interdependent. The Head of Finance will report to theChief Executive and Board.The Head of Finance takes lead responsibility for all financial functions and its services, the scope of the work is wide and challenging and incorporates full participation in business planning and control for both the charitable parent company and itswholly owned subsidiary trading company. You will have a strong strategic approach in delivering high quality and efficient financial accounting and management services, and an excellent knowledge of financial regulations and accounting for charities.An insight to your responsibilities:Business and Financial Planning:

  • Working closely with the Chief Executive in the preparation of business plans and annual budgets, and in the securing of, and accounting for, public, private and charitable funding.
  • Prepare and monitor the implementation of contracts, business and service plans.
  • Work on the development of Capital Investment programmes as required, preparing and monitoring budgets and liaising with external parties.
Financial Control & Monitoring:Sustain and develop the accounting system and associated Excel spreadsheets to ensure:
  • Effective monitoring, control and reporting of income and expenditure.
  • Control of expenditure on capital items and the maintenance of records of assets.
  • Provision of timely finance reports and regular cashflow projects.
  • Prepare year-end accounts and reports, arranging the annual audits of both companies.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly management accounts.
  • Ensure the compliance of the companies with all current accounting practices (including those relation to the Charities SORP).
  • Maximise investment income.
Supervise the operation, principally through delegation, of the systems of both companies for:
  • Monitoring and development of procurement policies and procedures.
  • Maintenance of the nominal ledger, purchase ledgers and sales ledgers.
  • Payroll and associated dealings with superannuation, tax and national insurance.
  • Daily cash reconciliation and banking.
  • Order and payment authorisation.
  • Petty cash payments and reconciliation.
  • VAT controls and returns.
Leadership Team:Contribute to the development and delivery of overall vision and strategy, ensuring financial considerations are addressed in decision making.Prepare and present papers and reports for management, staff, planning and liaison meetings as required.People Management:To lead a team of three staff and supervise the appointment and direct the work of all staff responsible; undertake regular appraisal of their work, and ensure their proper training and development.Play a part in the training of non-finance personnel to ensure their adherence to good procedures and their contribution to effective financial planning and control.Equality, Diversity and Inclusion:All staff are expected to further, promote, and ensure the implementation of the equal opportunities, diversity and safeguarding policies.You should have achieved or hold the abilities within:Essential:
  • Qualified Accountant - ACA / ACCA / ACMA / CIMA / CIPFA.
  • Experience in a similar role involving direct responsibility for managing financial activities.
  • Experience of assessing and making continuous improvements to finance operations, whilst understanding and contributing to wider institutional strategy.
  • Experience of overseeing financial issues and problems to make recommendations for solutions.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of leading and managing the audit process.
  • Knowledge and experience with payroll and pension processes.
Desirable:
  • Previous experience within a charity or publicly funded organisation.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on occasional after-hours work.
  • Experience of finance system implementation.
