Job Description

Your roleIt’s an exciting time to join Highways England as we prepare for various key priorities and deliverables during the 2nd Road Investment Strategy Period (RIS 2).The Energy and Sustainability Team is responsible for developing, drafting and execution of a strategy to address issues such as energy use, resource conservation, recycling, pollution reduction, waste elimination, transportation, education, and building design.As the Estates Sustainability Advisor based within our Estates & Facilities Management division, you will be working with the Estates Sustainability Manager to undertake activities to deliver on the strategy and commitment to HE’s activities in relation to Sustainable Development, including sustainable procurement, Climate Change, and the key environmental impact which operational activities can have on the environment. This includes supporting the development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards. You will be deeply committed to delivering environmental improvement and will be great at engaging and working with others to drive forward Sustainability within HE.This is a fixed term contract for 12 months based in Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds, with travel to other Highways England offices as required.What you’ll be leading on

  • Working across different teams within HE to collate the data necessary to understand the business’s carbon footprint to address the Greening Government Commitments (GGCs), and to put in place mechanisms for monitoring our impact on an ongoing basis.
  • Supporting the Estates Sustainability Manager in the development and implementation of an Environment Strategy.
  • Supporting Estates Sustainability, the development of Sustainability communications, develop content for and support the activities of the team to raise awareness of and encourage behaviour change on key environmental issues.
  • Operating a range of administrative processes assisting the Energy and Sustainability Team, providing flexible business support, to contribute to the delivery of business’ activities and objectives to time, quality and within budget.
  • Supporting the Estates Sustainability Manager and the wider team to and collate and analysing relevant information to produce relevant reports and presentations.

  • Demonstrate an awareness of the environment and sustainability, sustainable development, environmental management systems and environmental tools.
  • Experience of collecting data, maintaining and analysing data for inclusion in papers, reports and projects or presentations.
  • Experience of using a range of information technology applications (Excel, World, PowerPoint, Teams etc) and an awareness of how they can be utilised in the context of the job role.
  • Good written and oral communication skills for the effective liaison with all levels of multi-disciplined staff and staff representatives and outside bodies.
