Job Description

Your new role As a Claims Handler you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of cases; ensuring that information is pulled together in order to support decision making. You will have excellent communication skills as you work with a range of stakeholders to ensure robust recommendations are made on settling claims. Your collaboration skills will assist you to work closely with insurers, service providers, Traffic Officer service, ROC/RCC, inspectors, quantity surveyors, estimators and area teams to obtain information to support case resolution in a timely manner. This will be a busy but rewarding role.What you’ll be leading on

  • Responsible for a portfolio of cases; working with a range of stakeholders to ensure claims are thoroughly investigated; supported with a wide range of evidence from all relevant sources to provide recommendations to the Claims Manager on resolutions
  • Work closely with the legal department and barristers to discover supporting evidence for claims, ensuring all decisions will withstand scrutiny and are compliant with regulations and legislation to protect Highways England.
  • Responsible for thoroughly investigating cases to ensure all evidence is factual; responsible for direct contact with claimants, interrogating the claimant’s version of events; applying professional judgement and experience to support the resolution of cases.
  • Successfully close cases either through negotiation with insurers and loss adjusters to agree settlement figurers or by sending the Claims Manager recommendations on the best value outcome.
  • Produce recommendations and reports for the Claims Manager, ensuring these are all recorded accurately for auditing purposes, providing robust arguments to aid decision making on individual cases.
  • To be successful
  • Detailed understanding of the Highways Act 1980 and the implications on Highways England.
  • Experience of handling cases in a range of areas, including personal injury and insurance claims with an understanding of case management
  • Understanding of case law
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Competent IT skills; particularly Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • A bit about usThe Network Claims teams forms part of the Finance and Business Services Directorate. Network Claims are currently split into 2 teams, Red and Green, which respectively, handle claims against the Company (e.g. vehicle damage and personal injury) and by the Company (against insurers of those who negligently damage the Trunk Road Network).We currently have vacancies in the Red Claims Team which provides a professional claims handling service for claims made against Highways England by third parties or their representatives. The team ensures that all claims are thoroughly investigated, assessed and treated in a fair and consistent manner.
