Job Description

ASSISTANT TEAM LEADER 18+JOB DESCRIPTIONOverview of the National Citizen Service (NCS)NCS is a national programme that brings together young people from different backgrounds, builds their confidence, and challenges them to make a difference in their local community.It is a voluntary programme for all 16 and 17-year-olds that will promote:

  • a more cohesive society by mixing participants of different backgrounds.
  • a more responsible society by supporting the transition into adulthood for young people.
  • a more engaged society by enabling young people to work together to create social action projects in their local communities.
  • Find out more: Assistant Team Leader RoleWe are looking for Assistant Team Leaders aged 18+ to support the Team Leader to manage, inspire and develop a diverse group of 16 participants, aged between 16 and 17, throughout the NCS experience. The programmes take place during the summer and run for 2 and 3 weeks, you are able to apply to work on more than one wave. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills working with young people while being supported by a passionate team.Responsibilities of the postThe Assistant Team Leader will:Refer appropriate welfare issues to the Team Leader & Assistant Wave Leader and ensure the immediate welfare needs of the young people are met.Provide additional support to young people to enable them to engage fullySupport the Team Leader in delivering reflection sessions.Develop rapport quickly with young people in your team.Ensure all personal information regarding young people is kept confidentially in accordance with data protection requirements.Administer basic First Aid, if required, in line with NCS Training.Complete the Incident/Accident report form within 24 hours of any incident taking place.Support the Team Leader in following policies and procedures inc. risk assessing.Support the Team Leader in ensuring that all paperwork such as registers are completed accurately and handed in on time.Communicate quickly and effectively during the programme between the young people, the NCS office, colleagues and all external visitors and public you come into contact with.Live with and support participants in residential activities in the residential aspects of the programme. This will include supervision of evening activities and dorms.Support and maintain regular contact with young people during social action project planning and delivery including meeting face-to-face.To carry out duties within the scope and spirit of the programme, in line with Reed in Partnership and NCS policies, procedures and practices.Candidates must demonstrate the following skills and characteristics: Essential:
  • Empathetic, sensitive and approachable nature, tolerance and patience.
  • A genuine interest in the welfare of young people.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in difficult situations, and a responsible nature.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, with a flexible approach to work.
  • Belief in young people and in helping them to take a more active role in their communities.
  • Rapport and empathy with young people
  • Passion and interest in building stronger communities and influencing societal change.
  • Interested in young people’s personal development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Beneficial:
  • Prior experience of working with teenagers
  • Understanding of NCS programme.
  • Basic understanding of safeguarding, health and safety and data protection
  • Provide admin support, keeping records and handling sensitive data.
  • Full driving license
