Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a number of existing opportunities for graduates as Assistant Engineer and school leavers as Technical Officers to work across all the Strategic Transport service area on a full-time contract. This role will be based out ofKeynsham however flexible working patterns are available.About the roleStrategic Transport covers all areas of transport from walking and cycling schemes, public transport, transport policy, transport planning, strategic transport projects and spatial planning. We are a warm group of people from a diverse educational background,to name a few; transport planning, design, civil engineering, planning, geography, day release, construction sites.With us, you can start your journey to become professionally chartered or qualified whilst getting stuck into amazing projects with a strong pipeline of funding through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.Join us and you’ll have the chance to work on a range of local, district wide and sub regional projects. You will be assigned to projects that align with your interests, career aspirations and academic background. You will be encouraged to combine creativitywith technical know-how to solve our communities transport challenges. We will, of course provide you with all the training and support you need to progress your career, you will have the support of a mentor, our management team and technical experts.Early work will typically be supporting senior staff with technical input into a variety of projects all of which need to align to our overarching aim of transport decarbonisation. Day to day tasks could include:

  • Assessing the transport implications of planning applications
  • Assessing travel needs and opportunities to improve the way people travel
  • Identification and development of active travel schemes
  • Place-making schemes
  • Research and analysis of transport policy
  • Transport modelling, appraisal and economics
About you:We are interested in hearing from candidates who are keen to develop a rounded set of skills across transport.For the Assistant Engineer roles you will have achieved or be on track to complete a Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject for example, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Planning, Civil Engineering.For the Technical Officer roles you will have achieved or be on track to complete a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject for example, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Planning, Civil Engineering.Core skills across both opportunities are • An interest in transport planning/traffic engineering with a desire to learn about Transport Planning • Empathy and listening skills • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Strong analytical andproblem-solving skills. • Knowledge of transport planning principles and techniques • Adaptability to re-prioritise as things around you change • Microsoft Office skills such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint • Ability to explain, explore and discuss technical issues• Ability to work independentlyYour main place of work will be the award-winning, modern Civic Centre in Keynsham, halfway between Bath and Bristol, easily accessible via car or public transport, with a train station 5 minutes’ walk away.Why B&NES CouncilWe offer a wide range of benefits, to ensure that you are paid fairly for your work, have the flexibility to enjoy a great work/life balance, and have the support you need.
